What no one realized at the time—not even the production team—was that Warner had a dark past hidden behind his quiet demeanor. Just months before appearing on national television, he had committed a bank robbery in Oregon.

Warner’s criminal spree began in October 2008 with a robbery at Washington Mutual Bank. Unidentified at the time, he evaded police while gaining unexpected fame on cable TV. Encouraged by his apparent success, he robbed two more banks in April 2009 while still recognizable as a cast member of Deadliest Catch.

But fame has its cost. Warner was finally apprehended on December 31, 2009, during a routine traffic stop. According to Eugene Police Detective Jeff Donaca, “I watched the show too. I didn’t think you could end up on national TV, make a spectacle of yourself, and not end up getting caught for three bank robberies.”

In 2010, Joshua Tell Warner was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison. His accomplice, Garrett Wade Rice, received 34 months. Warner was also ordered to repay over $11,000 in restitution. As of early 2023, he is believed to be out of prison, possibly living under a new identity. His television career, however, is effectively over.

Warner’s former captain, Keith Colburn, remains a pillar of Deadliest Catch. Born in Nevada and raised in a working-class family, Keith ventured to Alaska in his early twenties with little more than a tent and $50 in his pocket. He found work as a greenhorn and worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming captain of the FV Wizard and a certified U.S. Coast Guard-licensed skipper in 1992.

With his wife Florence, who helps manage the business, Keith has built a life at sea while raising two children.
