Engine Breakdown and the Boat Goes on Sale

In 2018, the FV Time Bandit suffered a serious engine failure. Unable to make necessary repairs and faced with disagreements over filming, the Hillstrand brothers were forced to skip the King Crab season for the first time in 38 years. This was a huge blow to Captain Jonathan, who had never missed a season before.

Not long after, the boat was listed for sale through Dock Street Brokers for $2.8 million.

Josh Harris Joins the Time Bandit

Following the death of Captain Phil Harris in 2010, his son Josh Harris took over FV Cornelia Marie alongside Casey McManus. In Season 17 of Deadliest Catch, a major shake-up occurred. Josh was invited by Captain Jonathan to join the Time Bandit crew.

Faced with the tough decision of staying on his father’s boat or helping an old family friend, Josh chose to honor his father’s legacy and joined Captain Jonathan on the Time Bandit — despite the short notice.

Lawsuit Against Time Bandit

Back in January 2013, deckhand David “Beaver” Zielinski suffered a devastating injury when a firework exploded in his hand during the production of Deadliest Catch. The firework, allegedly a Time Bandit-branded device, caused severe fractures to his hand and forearm.

Zielinski filed a lawsuit in King County Superior Court in Seattle. The court ruled in his favor, and he was awarded $1.4 million in damages. The incident brought serious legal and financial challenges to the boat’s legacy.

Where Is the FV Time Bandit Now?

Despite the setbacks, Captain Jonathan has expressed a strong desire to reach the milestone of 40 years in the crab fishing business. He briefly retired in a “flash of glory,” but in 2020, he made a return to Deadliest Catch — this time joined by his brother Neal, nephew Phillip, and wife Heather Hillstrand.

Although Captain Andy has taken a step back, he’s shown interest in returning to the Bering Sea in future seasons.

Interestingly, the FV Time Bandit is still listed for sale — now priced at $2.9 million. According to Dock Street Brokers, the vessel has undergone recent refurbishments, including updates to the galley, crew quarters, and four staterooms.
