Mike Wolfe of American Pickers Sparks Debate as He Restores Historic Tennessee Town

American Pickers star Mike Wolfe is not only known for uncovering America’s hidden antique treasures — he’s now making headlines for restoring a historic Tennessee home and helping to revitalize the small town of Columbia, Tennessee.

According to The U.S. Sun, Mike has been rebuilding and transforming a 19th-century Italianate-style home, which dates back to 1873. The brick house features three bathrooms, a basement, a wood deck, a separate carport, a cabana, and a utility building, among other amenities.

Mike began restoring the home two years after purchasing it, aiming to return it to its former architectural glory. Exclusive photographs reveal that he has added a turret — a small tower reminiscent of castle design — and an awning over the front porch. Inside, the renovation highlights floor-length windows and a classic fireplace, blending modern comfort with historic charm.

Sharing updates on Instagram, Mike wrote:

“The 1873 Italianate I’ve been working on for a few years in Columbia, TN, is coming together. This house was missing the tower and the porch. The millwork and craftsmanship of the masonry have brought it back to its former glory.”

He continued, emphasizing his deep respect for history and community:

“Places like this belong to the community. People come and go — we’re all just caretakers in the end. The properties endure if we prioritize their significance to each town’s story.”

In June, Mike expressed excitement about rebuilding the home’s original tower, a part of the property that had been missing for decades. He said he was “honored” to bring it back to its original state, promising to keep fans updated on the project’s progress.

Mike, who lives about 40 minutes away in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, owns several other properties in Columbia, including the Columbia Motor Alley car garage and Two Lanes vacation rental. He also rents spaces to local businesses such as Muletown Coffee and Packard Playhouse, helping to boost the town’s small business scene.

Recent photos show Mike’s attention to aesthetic detail — he’s added vintage red-and-white gas pumps, a wooden pergola, a fire pit, and lush greenery to the outdoor areas. The U.S. Sun reports that his revitalization efforts in Columbia could cost as much as $9.3 million (reportedly misprinted as $93 million), marking a major investment in the town’s future.

While many locals have praised Mike’s passion for preservation and his role in reviving Columbia’s historic districts, not everyone welcomes the change. “It’s kind of interesting because a lot of people don’t want change, and some people do,” one insider told The U.S. Sun.

Still, Columbia continues to grow. New businesses — including a donut shop, a six-story condo with a restaurant, and a vehicle lot — are under development, further shaping the area’s transformation.

When he’s not managing restoration projects, Mike remains dedicated to his first love: traveling across America in search of antiques for the hit History Channel series American Pickers.

As Columbia evolves, Mike Wolfe stands at the crossroads of history and progress, proving that sometimes, preserving the past can also mean creating a new future.
