THE TERRITORY DISPUTE

Captain Keith Cobburn stood braced against an Arctic wind as the Wizard punched through Alaska’s jerking, ice-cold waters. Beside him was Rick, the ship’s newest deckhand, steady but green. Their mission: find a prime location to drop 250 crab pots—a massive operation requiring quiet skies and luck. Instead, they found trouble.

A mysterious vessel appeared on radar. No AIS signal. No ID. Just a shadow six miles out, pacing them in silence.

“Hey, Rick, I’m getting a third boat here,” Keith said, squinting into the gray horizon.
“Nothing on AIS,” Rick confirmed.

That meant one thing: whoever was out there didn’t want to be seen.

Keith’s instincts sharpened—this ship was watching them, maybe tracking them, possibly planning to raid their sets. Illegal poaching in American waters is rare, but not impossible. And today, the Wizard had company.

With seconds to act, Keith ordered a misdirection.

The Bering Sea doesn’t give its challengers a break—and the Wizard certainly didn’t get one.

During meal prep one night, the crew noticed smoke creeping out of the galley. Something was burning. Hard.

Roger grabbed an extinguisher and charged into the kitchen. Flames licked the ceiling. A 30-year-old cadet heater had failed—electrical malfunction.

They snuffed the fire, but the reality was sobering:
had the flames spread just a few more feet, the Wizard could have become a floating inferno.

Still, the crew regrouped, repaired the wiring, and pressed on. There was money to make. And danger to outrun.

THE ICE THAT ALMOST SANK THE WIZARD

Venturing 560 miles northwest of Dutch Harbor, Keith pushed the Wizard into some of the harshest waters near the Russian border. It was a gamble driven by instinct—and it nearly cost them everything.

The temperature plummeted.
The waves howled.
Ice began swallowing the ship.

By the time the crew assessed the damage, the Wizard carried 50,000–80,000 pounds of ice on her hull. Crab pots that normally weighed 800 lbs bulged with 3,000–4,000 lbs of ice each.

Top-heavy.
Overloaded.
Moments from capsizing.

“Keep a handle on this ice before it gets out of control,” Keith shouted.

For hours, the crew hacked at four-foot-thick ice sheets, racing to lighten the vessel before one rogue wave finished the job. Their muscles froze. Their hands went numb. But their resolve never cracked.
