Jonathan Hillstrand: The Legendary Captain of Deadliest Catch and His Life Beyond the Sea

Deadliest Catch has long been one of Discovery Channel’s most iconic series, offering viewers an unfiltered, gripping look into the lives of commercial fishermen who brave the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. Among the fearless individuals who have left a lasting impression on the show’s legacy is Jonathan Hillstrand—an Alaskan-born captain whose rugged determination and colorful personality made him a fan favorite.

A Fisherman Born and Bred

Jonathan Hillstrand hails from Homer, Alaska, and is a proud third-generation fisherman. From the tender age of three, Jonathan was already stepping aboard fishing vessels. By seven, he was casting lines, and by 17, he was immersed full-time in commercial crab fishing. After graduating high school, he committed his life to the sea—a path inspired by his father and grandfather.

Though best known for crab fishing, Jonathan’s career spans more than just the Bering Sea. He spent eight years lobster fishing along the New England coast and also devoted summers to salmon fishing aboard his 38-foot vessel, Fishing Fever.

The Time Bandit Era

For decades, Jonathan captained the Time Bandit, a legendary crabbing vessel he co-owned with his brother, Andy Hillstrand. The Time Bandit became a staple of Deadliest Catch from Season 2 through Season 13, and again in Seasons 17, 18, and 19. Together, the Hillstrand brothers turned their vessel into a symbol of resilience and expertise on the open sea.

Outside of fishing, Jonathan has played a key role in several family-run ventures including Time Bandit Entertainment, Spirits, Productions, Gear, and Fireworks. As of late 2023, his estimated net worth was around $2.2 million, largely thanks to his role as co-captain and the enduring popularity of Deadliest Catch.

A Retirement… or Two

Jonathan first announced his retirement at the end of Season 13, closing the chapter with a record-breaking catch. He shifted gears to pursue auto racing, humorously noting that he had gone from piloting a boat to driving a much smaller vehicle—a car.

However, his retirement didn’t last long. In Season 16, Jonathan made a surprise return—not just for nostalgia, but for necessity. He explained that captains must use their fishing quota (captain share) every few years or risk losing it. Motivated also by surging seafood prices and changes in global market strategies, he joined forces with Jake Anderson aboard the Saga. Though no longer at the helm, he admitted it was “sort of hard not to micromanage.”

Interestingly, when producers suggested he partner with Summer Bay’s Wild Bill Wichrowski, Jonathan famously refused, saying, “No, you couldn’t give me enough money to go out with Wild Bill.” Instead, he chose Jake—someone he trusted to share the wheel with.

The End of the Time Bandit

Although Jonathan returned to the sea, the Time Bandit did not. The vessel began facing increasing maintenance challenges, most notably an engine explosion that forced it out of commission. Despite being successfully repaired in 2018, the costs continued to mount. By 2020, the Time Bandit was listed for sale at nearly $3 million through Dock Street Brokers.

As of June 2023, the ship was reportedly sailing under the flag of Norway in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, indicating it may have found a new owner and purpose far from its original Alaskan waters.

Life Beyond the Sea

These days, Jonathan splits his time between business ventures and personal passions. He’s a devoted family man, a proud grandfather, and even a children’s book author—showing his softer side beyond the hardened fisherman exterior. Whether tearing up the open sea or cruising the highways on his Harley-Davidson, Jonathan continues to live life full-throttle.

While another return to Deadliest Catch or the ocean remains uncertain, one thing is clear—fishing is in his blood, and fans wouldn’t be surprised to see Captain Jonathan Hillstrand back on deck once more.
