Deadliest Catch: The Tragic Fates and Shocking Comebacks of the Bering Sea Legends
Deadliest Catch: Where Are the Stars Now?
Since 2005, Deadliest Catch has captivated audiences with its raw depiction of life at sea. The Discovery Channel hit follows daring crab fishermen who brave the perilous waters of the Bering Sea for one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet. Over more than 20 seasons, we’ve seen high-seas drama, personal tragedies, new beginnings, and powerful moments of resilience. As the series enters its 21st season, let’s look at where the most memorable cast members are now.
Sig Hansen – The Reluctant Legend
Captain of the Northwestern, Sig Hansen has been with Deadliest Catch since day one. As the show gears up for its Season 21 premiere on August 1, 2025, Hansen admitted to People magazine that he’s been contemplating early retirement due to health risks and family priorities.
“I’m a fisherman,” Hansen said. “But every time we go out, I get a little more scared. I’ve lost too many friends.”
Sig, married to June and father to three daughters (two adopted), has passed the torch to his daughter Mandy, who now captains her own vessel. Despite the fear, he’s not out just yet—but viewers can sense a transition coming.
“Wild” Bill Wichrowski – A Battle on Two Fronts
Captain of the Summer Bay, Bill joined the series in Season 13. He suffered an immense loss in 2020 when his deck boss, Nick McGlashan, died of an overdose. Later that year, Bill revealed he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Undergoing chemotherapy and hormone therapy while continuing to fish, Bill has used his platform to inspire others battling cancer. As of 2025, he’s in remission and updating fans through social media. His resilience remains a beacon of hope for many.
Jake Anderson – From Tragedy to Triumph
Since joining the show in 2007, Jake Anderson has faced numerous personal challenges: losing his sister and father, drug addiction, and financial hardship. Now clean and sober, Jake captains the Titan Explorer and is focused on family and rebuilding his dream.
His journey is one of the most compelling redemption arcs on the show.
Nick McGlashan – Gone Too Soon
Nick, who started working on boats at age 13, was beloved by fans and fellow crewmates. A hard worker and deck boss, he battled addiction but showed signs of recovery before his untimely death in 2020 at age 33. His death deeply affected Summer Bay’s crew, especially Captain Bill.
Mandy Hansen – The Next Generation
Daughter of Sig Hansen, Mandy is quickly proving herself as one of the show’s most promising young leaders. In Season 21, she captains her own expedition to Adam Island, Alaska, with her husband Clark Peterson as part of the crew. Sig calls her a “gift,” and many believe she could be the future face of Deadliest Catch.
Keith Colburn – Still Fighting
Captain Keith Colburn suffered a transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke) in Season 20. Despite health concerns, he returns for Season 21, determined to continue—but questions about his long-term future remain.
Hillstrand Brothers – Off the Radar
Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand, fan favorites, exited the show in 2017 amid legal disputes. Jonathan returned in 2020, but Andy has since stayed out of the public eye. Their legacy on Time Bandit remains one of the most iconic.
Phil Harris – A Beloved Legacy
Captain of the Cornelia Marie, Phil Harris suffered a fatal stroke in 2010. His emotional final episodes marked one of the most powerful moments in Deadliest Catch history. His son, Josh Harris, carried on his legacy—until his controversial exit from the show in 2022 following a resurfaced criminal allegation.
Tony Lara – A Short-Lived Captain
Tony Lara, who took over the Cornelia Marie after Phil’s passing, appeared in just six episodes. He died of a heart attack in 2015 at age 50 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Though brief, his impact on the show was significant.
New Faces, New Era
Sophia “Bob” Nielsen
At just 24, Bob is the youngest captain ever featured. She joined in 2023 and continues her late father’s legacy aboard the Kers. Mentored by Jake Anderson, she’s a fan favorite and a trailblazer for women in the industry.
Linda Greenlaw
Famed from The Perfect Storm, Linda joined Deadliest Catch in 2023. A legendary swordfishing captain and bestselling author, she brings decades of experience and wisdom to the Bering Sea.
Rick Shelford
A fourth-generation fisherman, Rick joined in Season 20. As captain of the Illusion Lady, he brings calm leadership and a strong family legacy to the show.
Jake Hutchkins
One of the few Black crabbers in the show’s history, Jake aims to become the first Black captain on the Bering Sea. Despite facing challenges, including racism and crew tension, he continues to inspire fans with his determination.
