Danielle Colby Reveals the Brutal Reason American Pickers Lost Its Magic

By Emma Richards | October 2025

Hello everyone, my name is Emma—welcome back to the channel. If you’re a fan of American Pickers, you’ve probably asked yourself the same question that millions of others have:
“What happened to the spark?”

The once-beloved History Channel show, which followed pickers Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz as they traveled across America uncovering hidden treasures, has seen a dramatic decline in both ratings and cultural impact. But now, after months of speculation, American Pickers star Danielle Colby has stepped forward to offer a brutally honest look behind the scenes—and it’s more emotional and complex than fans ever imagined.

“It Wasn’t Just a Show. It Was a Family.”

Colby, who uses they/them pronouns, has been a staple of American Pickers since its earliest days. Known for their vibrant style, encyclopedic knowledge of burlesque history, and fierce personality, Danielle has long been considered the emotional backbone of the show—both on-screen and off.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, Colby laid it all bare.

“At first, it was a great team. We weren’t just coworkers—we were friends, we were family. There was a kind of magic in those early years that you can’t manufacture, and you definitely can’t fake.”

That “magic” was built on a unique chemistry between Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz—a dynamic that fans loved. Their constant banter, differing personalities, and shared love for antiques created a compelling, heartfelt experience. Danielle was the grounding force, offering wit and insight from behind the counter at Antique Archaeology.

But that harmony began to fade long before most fans realized.

“We Lost More Than Just a Co-Star”

Frank Fritz’s departure in 2020 marked the beginning of a slow unraveling.

First came the health issues—a devastating back surgery, followed by a 65-pound weight loss during a lengthy battle with alcohol addiction. Fritz spent 77 days in rehab and came out sober, determined to return to the show. He told The Sun in 2021:

“I’m 100% ready to come back. I miss it. I want to be there.”

But he never got the chance.

In 2022, History Channel confirmed that Fritz had been quietly let go. The network offered no farewell, no tribute episode—just silence. The decision shocked fans. But for Danielle Colby, the pain went far deeper.

“We miss Frank, boy,” Colby said in a recent Newsweek interview. “His laughter is missed. His humor is missed. He was clever, funny, and knew how to bring people together. That kind of light can’t be replaced.”

And then came the worst blow—Frank’s death in September 2024 from complications related to a stroke and Crohn’s disease.

“It’s more than a TV loss,” Colby said. “It’s a huge loss for the Quad Cities. A huge loss for us. For the world.”

For Danielle, the show hasn’t been the same since.

Season 27 – The Fallout No One Wanted

Despite the network’s efforts to revamp the series, American Pickers Season 27 has suffered a massive ratings decline. The premiere episode aired in July 2025 to just 390,000 viewers—down from over 700,000 in Season 26.

The show tried to inject new energy by introducing Mike Wolfe’s brother, Robbie Wolfe, as a regular co-host. But Colby admits: it’s different now.

“We’re trying, but the soul of the show changed when Frank left,” they said. “The chemistry isn’t something you can recreate.”

Behind the scenes, Colby said, the vibe is still respectful, but the emotional connection feels fractured.

“We’re still a team. But it feels like we’re playing a different game now.”

Danielle Colby and Mike Wolfe – A Relationship That Endures

While many questioned whether Danielle would continue with American Pickers after all the turmoil, Colby made it clear: their relationship with Mike Wolfe remains strong and unshakable.

“Mike and I have known each other for decades. He’s one of my closest friends. At this point, our families are intertwined. There’s no divorcing from one another.”

They describe their dynamic as “sibling-coded”, a term often used to describe platonic yet deep emotional connections that mirror family bonds.

“What bonded us from the beginning was that we’re both collectors—obsessed with the stories, the history. For me, it’s burlesque. For Mike, it’s everything. And yes, he even collects a little burlesque history too,” Colby said with a smile.

That shared love for forgotten stories has kept them connected, even as the show struggles to find its footing.

A Museum Built on Passion—and Pain

While American Pickers may be floundering, Colby has found solace in personal passion projects. In June 2025, they finally opened the Colby Burlesque Museum, a long-time dream realized after years of planning and struggle.

“It’s more than a museum. It’s a space for healing, for expression. It’s about celebrating all bodies, all histories,” they said.

Mike Wolfe was instrumental in helping bring that dream to life.

“He was there when I doubted myself. He encouraged me to push forward. That made all the difference.”

In a touching social media post, Colby wrote:

“This museum is dedicated to every performer who was told they were too much, too bold, too flawed. And to Frank. Always Frank.”

“The Brutal Truth? We Lost Our Heart.”

When asked directly what went wrong with American Pickers, Danielle didn’t mince words:

“The brutal truth? We lost our heart. When Frank left, when Frank passed, the heartbeat of the show went with him. That’s something no editing, no casting, no antiques can replace.”

“People tuned in for the stuff, sure. But what they stayed for was the chemistry. The laughter. The conflict. The redemption. That was real.”

Danielle doesn’t blame the network or the producers—but they believe the show’s future lies in evolving into something more honest.

“Maybe it’s time to shift gears. Maybe American Pickers has to become more than just a road trip through barns. Maybe it has to become a road trip through grief, through change, through how we carry the past forward.”

What’s Next?

As of now, American Pickers continues to air Season 27 every Wednesday on the History Channel. But whispers about a possible final season are growing louder. Colby, however, is focusing on the present.

“I’m proud of what we’ve done. And I’m proud of what’s next. Whether I’m picking antiques or preserving burlesque history, I’ll keep telling stories that matter.”

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever felt like American Pickers just doesn’t “hit the same” anymore—you’re not alone. But behind the falling ratings and media headlines is a deeper story. A story of grief, friendship, legacy, and trying to keep going when the heart of something you love is gone.

Danielle Colby has shown incredible strength in revealing this truth. And perhaps, in doing so, they’ve reminded us of the most important lesson of all:

The real treasures aren’t the antiques. They’re the people we share the journey with.
