Does Mike Wolfe Really Drop His Own Cash on ‘American Pickers’ or Is It All Fake?
Does Mike Wolfe Really Drop His Own Cash on 'American Pickers' or Is It All Fake?
If you’ve ever browsed an antique store, you know prices can be all over the place. The same holds true for American Pickers, the long-running History Channel series where the price tag is often part of the drama. One question fans keep asking: Is the show real when it comes to money changing hands?
Considering Mike Wolfe owns the antiques store featured on the show, it’s fair to assume the purchases are legit — and they are. Since day one, Wolfe and former co-host Frank Fritz paid real money for their finds, and that hasn’t changed, even after Fritz’s departure and untimely passing. Today, Wolfe continues his picking adventures with longtime colleague Danielle Colby and fellow picker Jon “Jersey Jon” Szalay. But once those items arrive on the shelves at Wolfe’s store, the price certainly changes — quite a bit.
Mike Wolfe’s Store Has ‘American Pickers’ Finds Where It’s All About the Money
Haggling is a large part of American Pickers and a fundamental aspect of antique hunting. Although Fritz was the better haggler, Wolfe could still knock a couple of numbers off of a price tag. If the prices were fake, then that would make the bargains less impressive. Many antique stores or private sellers only accept cash. Plus, not all leads pan out, and other antiques surprise the team, which means they can haggle while the cameras are watching.
A reason why Wolfe is likely purchasing finds on American Pickers is because of his antique store. Wolfe owns a store in Iowa called Antique Archaeology that sells vintage goods. Wolfe previously owned two stores before selling the Nashville location earlier this year. Fritz also owned a store called Frank Fritz Finds in Illinois. Unfortunately, following Fritz’s death last year, his store has been experiencing some financial difficulties. However, these stores are the answer to whether Wolfe pays for the antiques. Wolfe sells vintage and antique goods at Antique Archaeology, including finds that are featured on American Pickers.
The resale value may increase due to the show’s popularity. However, many fans have found the price too hefty. In a report from the U.S. Sun, Wolfe has steadily increased prices, including marking up a pinball machine by 115%. Although the machine has been restored and was featured in an episode of American Pickers, fans believed that was far too steep a price. However, Wolfe is trying to turn a profit after transporting and restoring items. The most considerable cost to Wolfe that he must cover is, of course, the price he paid. The fact that Wolfe sells items purchased on American Pickers at such high prices is further proof that Wolfe does buy the antiques.
‘American Pickers’ Really Is an Authentic Show

While American Pickers is a reality show with some elements of production and staging, the core premise of paying for items is authentic, according to Wolfe. There is no doubt that the production plays a role in the setup for American Pickers; however, Wolfe and the other stars have always maintained that the show is genuine, which includes paying for the antiques. Look no further than Wolfe’s store for proof. So yes, Wolfe pays for those antiques on American Pickers one way or another.
