It’s over For Mike From American Pickers
It’s over For Mike From American Pickers

Is It Time for a Change on American Pickers? Fans Think So
For years, American Pickers was a beloved staple of reality television. The History Channel series, which began in 2010, followed Mike Wolfe and his co-host Frank Fritz as they traveled across the U.S. in search of rare antiques and hidden treasures. With its blend of nostalgia, humor, and genuine chemistry between its stars, the show quickly built a strong fanbase. But after 25 seasons, the magic appears to be fading — and fast.
The recent premiere of a new season in December drew just over 700,000 viewers. While that might sound impressive to some, it’s a dramatic fall from the show’s heyday, when episodes regularly pulled in over 3 million viewers. By the second episode, the ratings dipped even further, sinking to around 600,000 — a signal that something is seriously wrong.
A Series of Missteps
Many viewers point fingers at Robbie Wolfe, Mike’s brother, who took over co-hosting duties after Frank Fritz departed the show in 2020. Frank, once a fan favorite for his warm personality and rapport with Mike, stepped away due to health issues. He underwent major back surgery that left him with two rods in his spine and nearly 200 stitches.
After the surgery, Frank hoped to return — but communication with producers was inconsistent. Eventually, it became clear he wouldn’t be coming back. Then, in 2021, reports emerged of a rift between Mike and Frank, worsened by Frank’s struggle with alcohol and a subsequent 77-day rehab stay. Frank later revealed that during his recovery, Mike never reached out — not a call, not a text. Fans were outraged.
To make matters worse, Frank suffered a stroke in 2022 and was found by his father. Mike publicly wished him a speedy recovery, and months later, the two reportedly reconciled through a mutual friend. Still, Frank has not returned to the show.
The Chemistry Is Missing
Replacing Frank with Robbie might have seemed like a simple solution, but it hasn’t worked. While the brothers share real-life ties, their on-screen dynamic lacks the spontaneity and warmth that Mike and Frank brought to the show. Fans haven’t connected with Robbie the same way — in fact, many are actively calling for his removal, hoping it could revive the show’s declining ratings.
Meanwhile, longtime cast member Danielle Colby has taken on a more prominent role, appearing not just in the shop but also on the road. While some fans appreciated the change, others felt her expanded presence disrupted the original balance of the show.
Oversaturation and Declining Quality
Another key issue is overexposure. American Pickers has churned out 25 seasons in just 14 years — an intense pace that has arguably led to a dip in quality. Episodes have become repetitive, with few standout moments. What once felt like a thrilling treasure hunt now often feels like a formulaic routine.
The heart of the show — the human connection, the oddball stories, the bond between friends on the road — has diminished. And with Mike aging and arguably becoming more of a “TV personality” than the relatable picker he once was, even his presence has become a point of contention.
A Glimmer of Hope?
Despite the challenges, the network doesn’t seem ready to give up on American Pickers. In fact, it was recently renewed for 40 more episodes — a number that could span two to five seasons depending on how they’re aired.
But the big question remains: Is it time for a change?
Some believe a shake-up in the cast — perhaps introducing new faces with fresh energy — could breathe life back into the series. Others still hold out hope for Frank’s return, though that seems increasingly unlikely.
One thing is certain: American Pickers can’t continue down this path for much longer. The viewers have spoken, and unless something changes soon, the once-iconic show could be digging for its own legacy in the scrap heap of reality TV history.
