US Coast Guard Responds to Medical Emergency Aboard Fishing Vessel “Wizard”

A dramatic medical emergency unfolded at sea this week when the crew of the FV Wizard, a fishing vessel operating in the Bering Sea, suspected that one of their senior crew members suffered a mild stroke while onboard.

The distress began when the crew noticed troubling symptoms and immediately reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance. With only basic first aid knowledge available on board and no access to advanced medical care, the crew grew increasingly concerned about their colleague’s deteriorating condition.

“He needs to get off that damn boat,” one crewmember was heard saying, as they urgently coordinated with authorities for evacuation.

The vessel began making its way toward St. Paul Island—the closest location with an airstrip—despite the unfavorable weather. Rough seas and strong westerly winds made the approach to the narrow harbor extremely dangerous. Captain Keith Colburn expressed hesitation, knowing that misjudging the timing of the harbor entry could push the boat onto the beach.

“I’ve been in and out of this harbor hundreds of times,” Keith said. “But the swell direction today makes this incredibly risky.”

After a tense approach and a near-miss with large waves, the Wizard managed to enter the harbor safely. The ill crewmember was promptly transferred for medical evacuation. Emotions ran high as family members, including Keith’s brother, expressed concern over the situation.

“You’re going to be all right,” Keith was heard saying during the emotional departure. “I love you, man.”

Despite the successful harbor entry and initial transfer, the crewmember’s condition remains uncertain. Plans are underway to fly him from Anchorage to Seattle for further evaluation and treatment.

“Keith’s not invincible,” said a fellow crew member. “This is going to be a sobering reality for him.”

With Keith sidelined, his sister Bonnie is expected to take over the remainder of the fishing trip. The crew is now forced to carry on in his absence, navigating both emotional stress and the brutal physical demands of life at sea.

“We just have to buckle down and grind it out,” Bonnie said. “That’s the way it is right now.”
