Sig Hansen LOSES CONTROL Of The Northwestern!
Race Against Time: Captain Sig Battles Ice, Eagles, and Equipment Failure in Final Push for Crab
Bering Sea – With the ice advancing 15 meters a day and the aelo season fast approaching, Captain Sig Hansen of the F/V Northwestern is on a final push to haul in the remaining 9,000 pounds of crab before switching over to the opilio hunt.
Sig has tracked a promising beise crab school skirting the western edge of a restricted area. But with time running out, every haul counts. “These crab are valuable—the price keeps going up. Hopefully we can pull a good catch out of this,” Sig remarks as the pots drop.
Initial pulls are disappointing: smalls, a few females, and not much volume. “You just never know. Sometimes a band of crab can turn on you,” he says. With solo prospecting proving too slow, Sig decides to partner up.
Just 50 yards away, Captain Keith Colburn aboard the F/V Wizard joins the effort. The two captains synchronize their gear placement, packing in double the herring to carpet-bomb the sea with bait, hoping to create a “bait cloud” so pungent it drives crab into a feeding frenzy. “We’re saturating the area. It’s not ideal setting gear this close, but if the numbers double, I’ll take it,” Sig admits.
But as the partnership starts to show promise, disaster strikes. Sig loses steering aboard the Northwestern. The cause? A bald eagle nesting on the mast damages the satellite, knocking out the autopilot. “You can’t make this stuff up,” Sig says, now steering by hand and relying on old-school charts and compass navigation.
The situation worsens below deck. An engine room alarm reveals a hydraulic leak—water was being sucked into the air filter. A temporary fix gets them moving again, but Sig’s patience wears thin. “I’m getting tired of it—alarm after alarm,” he vents. “We need to be right and tight for opies.”
Despite the chaos, Sig and Keith remain committed to hauling in their remaining quota. “We just need one good set,” Sig says, holding out hope. With no autopilot, no room for error, and only determination guiding them, they push forward.
In the unpredictable world of Bering Sea crab fishing, even a bald eagle can become the wildcard in a high-stakes hunt. But one thing is certain—these captains won’t back down until the tanks are full.
