The Cornelia Marie was commissioned in 1989 and named after Cornelia Collins. After ownership changes, Phil eventually became a part-owner, forming a deep bond with the vessel. When Deadliest Catch began filming in 2004, Phil had already spent years commanding the boat. The Cornelia Marie became a regular presence by season two.
Phil’s tough-but-fair leadership, sharp humor, and authenticity resonated with viewers. But the job took its toll. In 2008, he suffered a pulmonary embolism and nearly died. Against medical advice, Phil returned to the sea in 2009, determined to keep fishing.
Phil Harris’s Final Days
